5 ways to Prepare in Southern Arizona
1. Have a Pool? Call your pool company to get prepared for the winter months. The biggest thing is to keep the pool full-water evaporates in the desert- even in the winter. During the winter PH rises more quickly, so check often to avoid staining or scaling. Do it now, so you don't have to do it in the spring before you use your pool again.
2. Save your Plants. Either cover them or with potted plants bring them indoors. Keep plants watered during winter months. This may help save the plants from freezing since it keeps the soil warmer than dry soil.
3. Check windows & doors for leakage. Identify where your air is escaping unnecessarily and change or add weather stripping. This will ensure your HVAC isn't working so hard during the winter months and it will save you money on your heating bill.
4. Have a wood burning fire place?
Have a professional check your chimney. It's good to have this checked at least every two years. Also important, is to make sure you don't have any animals living in there before you decide to fire it up one cold winter evening. "Raccoon anyone?" Not only that, a routine cleaning will prevent dangerous buildup that could be highly flammable. While you're at it, make sure your smoke detectors are working properly- just in case.
5. Protect your Pipes!
Check on outdoor pipes-that carry water- and if they are exposed around the house wrap them for protection from freezing. You might hire an inspector to check on the pipes for any residual water to prevent freezing and eventually bursting.
